Mountains were an important symbol for men in the Bible.
NOAH — …exactly five months from the time the flood began, the boat came to rest on the MOUNTAINS of Ararat (Genesis 8:4 NLT).
Noah ended his journey at the mountains of Ararat.
Mountain lesson learned: Fulfilling the call
ABRAHAM — Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the MOUNTAINS, which I will show you (Genesis 22:2 NLT).
Abraham was directed by God to the mountains at Moriah to sacrifice his son Isaac on the altar. God then released him from this action.
Mountain lesson learned: Obedience
MOSES — Then Moses climbed the MOUNTAIN to appear before God... (Exodus 19:3a NLT).
God guided Moses to ascend Mt. Sinai eight different times to receive divine revelation. (See The Life of the Christian Mystic book for details).
Mountain lesson learned: Receiving instruction
DAVID — You formed the mountains by your power... (Psalm 65:6a NLT).
David wrote that God created the mountains.
Mountain lesson learned: God's awesomeness
ELIJAH — So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the MOUNTAIN of God (I Kings 19:8 NLT).
Elijah felt compelled to go to Mount Sinai. God presented Elijah with his next mission.
Mountain lesson learned: God spoke to Elijah on the mountain
JESUS — Afterward Jesus went up on a MOUNTAIN and called out the ones he wanted to go with him. And they came to him (Mark 3:13 NLT).
The disciples were summoned by Jesus to go up the mountain. He provided for all their needs.
